Natural Forest Reservation Lange Leitn Neckenmarkt

The natural forest reservation and European Conservation Area “Lange Leitn Neckenmarkt“ (German ’Leitn’ means meadow) is situated on the southern slopes of the “Ödenburger Gebirge” mountains directly at the state border between Austria and Hungary about 4 km north-north-east of Neckenmarkt or 6.5 km south-east of Sopron (Ödenburg) respectively.

It is restricted to lot 3533 of the cadastral community Neckenmarkt and covers an area of 28.981 ha.

The area is situated at a height of 410-490 m above sea level in the eastern part of the “Ödenburger Bergland” and comprises Central European oak-hornbeam forests as well as acidophilus oak forests (occurring according to soil conditions and corresponding water balance). The transitions between Directive habitat type 9170 Galio-Carpinetum oak-hornbeam forests and acidophilus oak woods are smooth and only slightly distinct with regard to species composition.

According to forestry classifications the area is part of stand area 5.2 (Bucklige Welt) of the main stand area ”Östliche Randalpen“, the eastern edge of the Alps. As a crystalline substratum of old rock, the Ödenburger Bergland is one of the most eastern branches of the Central Alps. The oak and the oak-hornbeam forests that have developed in that area correspond to the possible natural vegetation of that altitude level of the above mentioned stand area. Acidophilus Central European oak-hornbeam forests can be found at their most eastern distribution border of that area, so that high responsibility for the coverage of those area borders and conservation of the total distribution area of the habitat type is required.

The regional variant of the habitat type 9170 Galio-Carpinetum oak-hornbeam forests corresponds to the acidophilus variant of the Galio-Carpinetum oak-hornbeam forest (Galio sylvatici-Carinetum subass. Luzuletosum). Due to oligotrophic acidophilus soils, the hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) significantly gives way to the dominant Sessile (Quercus petraea) and thus indicates the close interlinking of those stands to the acidophilus oak forests (Luzulo Quercetum). Structurally, the stands are rich in deadwood and between 50 and 70 years old. In relation to the cycle of undisturbed stands under jungle conditions this area could be attributed to the late initial phase to early optimum phase, standing at the beginning of a structural development with regard to the forest community.

Flora in these stands on acidophilus soils is poor and dominated by grass-like species, dwarf shrubs such as bilberry, the European blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), do not occur to a large extent due to the continental site, only heather (Calluna vulgaris) can be found in some places.
